Best Paper for Restaurant Menus: Weight, Finish, and Size

The best paper for most restaurant menus is an 80 lb cover weight cardstock in 8.5 x 11 or 8.5 x 14, printed on the office printer you already own. It is heavy enough to stand up in a guest's hand and cheap enough to reprint the day your prices change. This guide covers the four choices that decide a menu: weight, finish, size, and printer. Every price below comes from our Restaurants collection today.

Start with weight: cover stock for the menu, text weight for inserts

Weight is the first thing a guest feels. Hand someone a menu printed on copy paper and it droops over their fingers like a receipt. Hand them one printed on cover stock and it holds its shape.

Our White Smooth Cardstock is 80 lb cover weight, 216 gsm, and .0118" thick. That is about twice as thick as standard printer paper. For a single sheet menu that sits on the table or rides in a menu cover all night, start here.

Lighter paper still has a job. Text weight paper, like our 60 lb parchment, works for daily specials slipped inside a menu cover, wine inserts, and anything you print fresh every day. It folds flat, feeds easy, and costs less than cover stock.

In between sits our 67 lb Bright White Vellum Bristol. Restaurants use it for menus they swap out every week. It feels like a real printed piece and it folds clean for a two-panel menu.

Pick a finish that matches your room

The finish is the look and feel of the surface. Your menu is the one piece of your brand every guest holds, so the finish should match the room.

  • Smooth white. Clean, bright, sharp black type. A good fit for modern rooms, cafes, and any menu with photos or a logo in color. White Smooth 80 lb is the workhorse here.
  • Vellum finish. A slight tooth you can feel, bright white, no glare. The Bright White Vellum Bristol is solid white paper with a soft texture. It is a different product from see-through vellum.
  • Parchment. A mottled, aged look that reads as old-world, steakhouse, or wine bar. Aged Parchment 65 lb cover for the main menu, Light Aged Parchment 60 lb text for inserts.
  • Kraft and linen. Brown kraft fits BBQ, burger, and coffee shops. Linen has a woven texture that guests rub between their fingers. Both come in 80 lb cover.

One tip from a real bar owner: dark or deep-toned paper gets hard to read in dim light. If your dining room runs dark at night, pick a lighter shade and a bold type size.

Menu sizes that fit your table and your printer

Size decides two things: how much you can fit, and which printer can run it. Here is how the common menu sizes break down.

Size Best for Printer
8.5 x 11 One-page lunch or dinner menu Any office printer
8.5 x 14 A longer list on one sheet Printers with a legal size tray
11 x 17 Folds in half to a four-panel 8.5 x 11 menu Tabloid printers or a print shop
4.25 x 11 Drink, dessert, and specials cards Most printers from the manual feed slot
5.5 x 8.5 Kids menus and specials inserts Most printers from the manual feed slot

Measure your menu covers before you order. A sheet cut to fit your cover slides in clean every time. We stock all five sizes above in White Smooth 80 lb, and we cut other sizes to order if you reach out.

Make sure it runs through your printer

Most restaurants print menus in the back office, so the paper has to feed without a fight. M. Anderson owns a restaurant and tried a stack of brands before landing on our white linen:

"I print my own menus for my restaurant, and often struggle with paper getting caught in my printer, or not holding up well. This paper is durable, runs through my printer without issue and looks beautiful."

A few settings make heavy paper behave:

  • Set the paper type to cardstock or heavy paper in the print dialog.
  • Feed one test sheet before you run the whole stack.
  • On a laser printer, use the heavy setting so the toner gets the heat it needs. Slower print speeds help too.
  • If the main tray balks, use the manual feed or bypass slot.

The Vellum Bristol is the easiest choice if you are unsure about your printer. It runs on laser and inkjet with no special settings.

Real paper wears out. Plan to reprint.

Paper menus are real paper. A spilled drink or a busy Friday will wear one out, same as any unlaminated menu. The fix is a heavy, good feeling sheet that is cheap to replace. Fresh menus also let you change a price or swap a dish tonight instead of next month.

FAQ

What weight paper is best for restaurant menus?
80 lb cover weight for menus guests hold all night. 60 lb to 67 lb works for inserts, specials, and menus you replace every week.

Can I print restaurant menus on a regular office printer?
Yes. Set the paper type to cardstock or heavy paper, feed one test sheet, and use the manual feed slot if the main tray struggles.

What size is a standard restaurant menu?
8.5 x 11 is the most common single-page menu. 8.5 x 14 fits a longer list, and 11 x 17 folds in half to a four-panel menu.

Is cardstock waterproof?
No. Cardstock is real paper, and a spill will mark it. Plan on reprinting menus as they wear, and buy a pack big enough to cover a month of reprints.

Smooth or parchment for a menu?
Smooth white for a clean, modern look and color logos. Parchment for an aged, old-world look that suits steakhouses, Italian, and wine bars.
