Restaurant Menu Sizes: Which Size Fits Your Table and Printer
The most common restaurant menu size is 8.5 x 11, a single letter sheet that fits any office printer and most menu covers. Go to 8.5 x 14 when your list runs long, 11 x 17 when you want a menu that folds into four panels, and a narrow 4.25 x 11 or 4.25 x 14 card for drinks, desserts, and specials.
This guide puts the five sizes side by side so you can match the size to your table, your menu cover, and your printer before you order a single sheet.
Restaurant menu sizes at a glance
| Size (inches) | Layout | Best for | Printer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.5 x 11 | One sheet, or folds to two 5.5 x 8.5 panels | Lunch and dinner menus, cafes, diners | Any office printer |
| 8.5 x 14 | One tall sheet, or a tri-fold | Long menus, breakfast plus lunch on one page | A printer with a legal size tray |
| 11 x 17 | Folds in half to four 8.5 x 11 panels | Full dinner menus, wine and food together | A tabloid printer or a print shop |
| 4.25 x 11 | Narrow card | Drinks, desserts, daily specials, place settings | Most printers, from the manual feed slot |
| 4.25 x 14 | Tall narrow card | Cocktail lists, tasting menus, event dinners | Printers with a legal size path |
One quick rule of thumb: a guest should see the whole menu without turning it more than once. If your list does not fit one side of 8.5 x 11 at a readable type size, move up a size before you shrink the font.
8.5 x 11: the everyday menu

Letter size is the safe pick. Your printer already takes it, menu covers come in this size more than any other, and a single sheet sits flat on a two-top without hanging off the edge.
Print one side for a short lunch menu. Print both sides for lunch on the front and dinner on the back. Fold it in half and you get a four-panel menu that is 5.5 x 8.5 closed, a good size for kids menus and brunch.
For a menu guests hold all night, use 80 lb cover stock like our White Smooth Cardstock. It is 216 gsm and .0118" thick, about twice as thick as standard printer paper, so it holds its shape in one hand.
8.5 x 14: more room on one sheet
Legal size gives you three more inches of height. That is room for two or three more sections, a bigger logo, or a breakfast list above the lunch list, with no second page.
Check your printer first. Most office laser printers and many inkjets have a legal setting, but some need the sheet fed from the manual slot. One customer printed invitations on our 65 lb parchment in this size:
"The legal size ran through my HP printer just fine and the weight was exactly what I expected from 65lb paper."
persnickety reader, Aged Parchment 65 lb cover
An 8.5 x 14 sheet also folds into thirds for a tri-fold menu. Each panel comes out about 4.7 x 8.5, a good fit for takeout menus by the register.
11 x 17: the four-panel folded menu

Fold an 11 x 17 sheet in half and you have a menu that opens like a book: four 8.5 x 11 panels. Put the cover and hours on the front, starters and mains inside, and drinks or desserts on the back.
The catch is the printer. Most office printers stop at 8.5 x 14. If yours does not take tabloid paper, a local print shop can run it on your stock, or you can print two 8.5 x 11 pages and slide them into a two-page menu cover instead.
Heavy cover stock folds best when the fold line is scored first. Ask us about scoring when you order, and we can score the fold line in our shop.
4.25 x 11 and 4.25 x 14: narrow menus
A narrow card stands out on the table next to the main menu. Restaurants use it for cocktail lists, dessert menus, and a nightly specials card tucked into the menu cover.
A 4.25 x 11 card is half of a letter sheet cut the long way. We stock it pre-cut in White Smooth 80 lb and Natural Smooth 80 lb, so you skip the trimming and every card comes out the same width.
The 4.25 x 14 card is the tall version, half of a legal sheet. It gives a tasting menu or event dinner room for five or six courses. It is not a listed size in our shop yet, so send us a note and we will cut it to order on any of our menu papers.
Narrow cards feed best from the manual or bypass slot. Set the paper size to custom in the print dialog and run one test card first.
Measure your menu cover before you order

If you use menu covers, the cover picks the size for you. Measure the inside of the sleeve or the photo corners, not the outside of the cover. Most covers take 8.5 x 11 or 8.5 x 14, and a few take 11 x 17 folded or a narrow insert.
A sheet cut to the exact size slides in clean and does not buckle in the sleeve. If your cover takes an odd size, send us the inside measurement and we will cut your paper to fit.

Pick the paper after you pick the size
A big 11 x 17 menu needs a stiff sheet so it does not flop when a guest opens it. A specials card you reprint every night can go lighter.
